Résumé

The purpose of this article is to study the possibility of creating a common currency within the
Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which is still forcing difficulties in the
achievement of monetary integration, despite the adoption of the Monetary Cooperation
Programme. For this, we applied the various criteria constituting an OZ to the economies of the
ECOWAS countries. The aim is to analyze the progress made in the project, the obstacles
encountered, as well as the challenges and the improvements to be made.
The results show that despite the accumulative delays, some progress has been made, such as: the
free trade area, the customs union, and the integration of stock markets.
