Abstract:
Employing Folk Traditions in Developing Sustainable Cultural Tourism in Sudan
This study aims to shed light on the relationship of folk traditions with tourism, and its
importance as one of the products of culture that can contribute to the variation of the tourism
product and promotion of the tourism industry in Sudan. The hypothesis of the study lies in
Sudan's tourism potentials and rich folk traditions described as diverse due to the multiplicity of
Sudan’s ethnicities and cultures. However, this potential has not been exploited, resulting in
wasted opportunities for economic development and increasing of national income. The study
aims to value folk traditions and its promising potentials in increasing the economic return and in
developing sustainable cultural tourism in Sudan while preserving and reviving them. The
approach followed by the study is a descriptive approach that depends on the presentation and
analysis of information to reach mental results. As for the axes of the study, it started by
explaining the concepts of heritage, cultural heritage, folk traditions, tourism and sustainability
in tourism. then it examined Sudan’s tourism attractions, its potentials, and the most important
obstacles of tourism industry in Sudan. Then it suggested the possibility of employing folk
traditions in tourism, with presentation of the experiences of some Arab countries in this regard.
The most important results lie in the possibility of employing this diverse folk traditions as a
cultural product to the promotion of sustainable cultural tourism through some practical
suggestions such as: creation of (tourist routes) that aim to offer the opportunity for tourists to
experience the customs, traditions, and popular competitions in their natural context, presenting
performances of traditional art in tourist facilities and theaters in (an artificial context) under
specific conditions. It is also possible to reproduce folk traditions materials, or to inspire them in
drawing and drama works, and support the traditional industries sector and contribute to the
transfer of traditional knowledge in an organized manner, to encourage the tourism industry in
Sudan. At conclusion, the study presented explicit proposals to promote of the tourism sector in
Sudan, valuing folk traditions, benefiting from its elements, employing them as a tourist product
to increase their economic and social return, while preserving, and reviving them
